The ESP32 D1 Mini module offers a significant performance leap compared to its predecessor. It uses a dual-core processor clocked at up to 240 MHz, while the ESP8266 has a single-core chip (up to 160 MHz). SRAM memory has also been increased from 160 KB to 520 KB.

A key advantage of the newer version is built-in Bluetooth 4.2 BLE support, which the ESP8266 lacks.
