Description
RP2040-Zero - Mini Development Board
RP2040-Zero is a compact development board based on the RP2040 chip, known from the popular Raspberry Pi Pico module. Designed with miniaturization in mind, it offers full software compatibility with the original chip while fitting on a footprint of just 18 x 23.5 mm. Thanks to castellated edges, the module can be soldered directly onto the target PCB as an SMD component. The board is an excellent choice for Arduino and for Raspberry Pi projects that require a powerful chip in a small form factor.
Key Technical Features
- Microcontroller: RP2040 with dual-core ARM Cortex-M0+ processor running at 133 MHz
- Built-in memory: 264 kB SRAM and 2 MB QSPI Flash memory
- Connector: USB Type-C port for power and programming
- GPIO pins: 29 multifunction pins, 20 of which are placed on the board edges
- Converters: 4 channels of 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC)
- Interfaces: 2x UART, 2x SPI, 2x I2C, 16x PWM, USB 1.1, and programmable I/O (PIO) block
- Indicators: Integrated addressable WS2812 RGB LED connected to GP16 pin
- Physical dimensions: 18 x 23.5 mm
Benefits
- Reduced form factor - the board is nearly three times smaller than the standard Pico module, making it easier to install in limited spaces
- Modern USB-C connector - replaces the older microUSB standard, offering higher mechanical durability
- Software compatibility - full support for C/C++, MicroPython, and CircuitPython, as well as Arduino IDE libraries
- Quick diagnostics - built-in RGB LED and physical BOOT button make code development and testing easier
- Alternative mounting methods - edge design allows surface-mount (SMD) assembly or through-hole mounting after soldering 2.54 mm pitch headers
Example Applications
- Compact IoT devices - miniature sensor nodes transmitting telemetry data
- Wearable electronics - embedded systems in clothing thanks to the module's small size
- Lighting controllers - hardware support for digital LED strips (WS2812, APA102 models)
- Human interface devices (HID) - designing custom keyboards and controllers connected via USB port
- Automation systems - local actuator modules controlling relays and actuators
- Hardware prototyping - base module for building miniature robots and measurement devices
